Tapola, popularly called “Mini Kashmir of Maharashtra”, is a quiet hamlet where the Koyna and Solshi rivers meet the backwaters of Shivsagar Lake, about 25-30 km from Mahabaleshwar and a scenic drive from Satara. Think untouched lake shores, wooden boats, strawberry country nearby and almost no crowds — Tapola is the slow, scenic counterpoint to a busy hill-station holiday, and it pairs beautifully with Vasota camping at Bamnoli on the same lake.
Why Tapola Is Called Mini Kashmir
The nickname comes from the landscape: a serene lake hemmed in by green hills, with morning mist drifting over the water and small boats ferrying villagers across — scenes that remind travellers of Kashmir’s Dal Lake. Shivsagar Lake here is actually the same backwater that touches Bamnoli on its southern side, so the two villages share one vast, beautiful waterbody created by the Koyna Dam.
Things to Do in Tapola
Boating on Shivsagar Lake: the signature Tapola experience. Local boatmen offer leisurely rides, sunset cruises and longer trips toward the confluence points of the Koyna and Solshi rivers.
Kayaking and water sports: in season, operators near the Tapola boat club offer kayaking and other lake activities — calmer and more scenic than most water-sports spots in Maharashtra.
Visit Vasota Fort by boat: from the lake, trekkers can access the Vasota Fort jungle trail with forest department permits. Many guests of Seven Hill Cottage combine a Tapola boating evening with a morning Vasota trek from the Bamnoli side.
Strawberry farms and village food: on the road between Mahabaleshwar and Tapola you pass strawberry fields and small farms selling mulberries, jam and chikki — stock up on the way.
How to Reach Tapola
From Mahabaleshwar: about 25-30 km via the Tapola road, roughly 1 hour of driving through forest and farmland. From Satara: around 70-80 km via Medha and Choravane. From Pune: roughly 150-170 km via Satara or via Mahabaleshwar. Roads are paved but narrow in the final stretch — drive slowly and enjoy the views. The nearest railway station is Satara; the nearest airport is Pune.
Best Time to Visit Tapola
October to February is ideal — pleasant days, cool evenings and clear lake views. Monsoon (June-September) turns everything intensely green and the waterfalls along the route come alive, but boat services can slow down in heavy rain. Summer mornings are still lovely on the water, though mid-days get warm.
Where to Stay Near Tapola
Tapola itself has only a handful of basic stays, which is part of its charm. A smarter plan is to base yourself at Seven Hill Cottage, Bamnoli — a lakeside camping resort on the same Shivsagar Lake with tents, deluxe rooms and a home-style Maharashtrian restaurant — and take a day trip to Tapola, Mahabaleshwar or Kaas Plateau. Our one-day packages from Rs. 1,099 include meals, campfire and boating options.
Tapola Travel Tips
- Carry cash — network coverage and digital payments can be patchy in the valley
- Reach the boat club before 5 PM; rides wind down at dusk
- Combine Tapola with Vasota trek permits in advance — sanctuary slots are limited
- Pack a light jacket: the lake breeze turns cool after sunset, even in summer
